The UK pet grooming industry is unregulated — anyone can call themselves a groomer. These eight questions help you separate properly trained professionals from the rest.

    Eight questions to ask

    1. What's your training? Look for City & Guilds Level 2 or 3, iPET Network, or a recognised apprenticeship.
    2. Are you insured? Public liability cover is standard. Reputable salons will tell you the policy provider.
    3. Do you use cage drying? Cage dryers are linked to heatstroke deaths. Hand-held or stand drying is gentler.
    4. How do you handle nervous dogs? A good answer mentions breaks, low-stress handling, and a willingness to stop and reschedule.
    5. What's your matting policy? Honest groomers will shave heavily matted coats rather than brush them out for hours.
    6. Can I see the grooming area? Reputable salons will give you a quick tour.
    7. How long will my dog be there? 1.5–3 hours is normal for a typical groom. All-day stays may mean cage drying.
    8. What's included in the price? Bath, dry, brush, trim, nails, ears. Ask which are extras.

    Red flags

    • No vaccination check on first visit.
    • Pressure to sedate or muzzle on the first appointment.
    • No photo updates if you ask for them.
    • Quotes that are dramatically below the local average.
